The very attempt to adjudicate on what writing mattered (thus establishing demarcation lines to mark off major writing from that whose significance was merely utilitarian, sociological or symptomatic) implied a simultaneous judgement on the value of kinds of reading and readers.

As a professionalized form of reading, criticism — even in its most conventional forms - is a process of so articulating those inferences as to make them available for pedagogic dialogue. Critical writing thus erects constructions of what the text means (or might have meant, or could not say for itself) in other words than those it used itself. In the last chapter, we argued that the conventional distinction between critical and creative practice was in fact unstable and ripe for deconstruction.
