But later, when she was seated, cradling a cup of coffee in one hand and plucking at her chair’s stuffing with the other, it was difficult not to brood about the future. If she didn’t find a job within the next fortnight, even this shabby flat would be beyond her means. And no matter how desperate she was, she couldn’t claim any state benefits. Her tax evasion was stupid as well as illegal, she now realised. Much too late to have qualms, she wondered if dishonesty could be an inherited trait. Sobering thought.
Kate looked away from mocking blue eyes, feeling uncomfortable. And that was ridiculous. She’d every right to kick him. The conversation had been minimal.
