Lexicography and “Lost Tales”: 1918–1920 Released from military duties in October 1918, Tolkien spent almost the next two years immersed in words. His former tutor William Craigie, one of the editors of the then incomplete Oxford English Dictionary, had him made an assistant lexicographer, dealing primarily with the etymologies of w- words under co-editor Henry Bradley. Supplementing his income with private tutorials to English undergraduates, in summer 1919 Tolkien began a Middle English glossary for Kenneth Sisam’s student anthology Fourteenth Century Verse and Prose.
